Level Boutique Hotel and Bookstore
PHILADELPHIA, PA

CONCEPT
This design is based on the understated relationship between the earth and the atmosphere, hard and soft, and masculine and feminine. Guests will first feel the pull of select dense materials and colors amongst a vast sea of softness and tranquility. As they transition into upper floors of the building, density will quickly let go and allow guests to breath and take in the feeling of being above the clouds.
GOAL
The goal of the design was to create a visual and tactile experience for the user. Greeting guests with deep and rich materials and colors encourages the feeling of being grounded and a part of their environment. While they are still united in the main concept, the bar and bookstore should also maintain unique identities. Second floor suites invite light and airy feel into the design and encourage users to let go and relax.
PROGRAMMING
Below shows relationships between public and private space on the first floor. The circulation and lounge space of the hotel serves as the center of the building, uniting amenity and retail spaces with more private rooms for staff and small parties. It is also noted that the reception area acts as the link between staff and patrons and as such, must not only have a clear sight line to the entrance, but make a visual impact on guests.

LOBBY DETAILS

CUSTOM LIGHT FIXTURE

BAR
The bar area has a dreamy feel with soft daylight through glass bricks and backlit quartz counters. Acoustic paneling is hidden within wall and ceiling millwork to account for noise and makes a unique, curved path from behind the bar to the ceiling. Streaks of bright color are found in the upholstered seating around the perimeter of the room.

BOOKSTORE
The bookstore doubles as a gallery space for local artists. Custom book storage and seating matches a custom platform that doubles as a storage and a stage for events like book signings or readings. The plan accounts for extra space for a removable gallery wall to display extra artwork for special events.
